The political life of encryption

On June 7, 2022, the International Association for Media and Communication Research (IAMCR) Communication Policy and Technology Section presented a webinar ‘Concealing for Freedom‘.

Authors Francesca Musiani and Ksenia Ermoshina (CIS-CNRS) launched their new book ‘Concealing for Freedom. The Making of Encryption, Secure Messaging and Digital Liberties‘ (Mattering Press), the first in-depth sociological inquiry in the field of secure communication.

Current debates around encryption have fundamental implications for our individual liberties and collective presence on the Internet, while the cryptography community has renewed its efforts to create next-generation secure messaging protocols and applications. The webinar shows how these tools differ in their intended technical architectures, their targeted user publics, and the underlying values and business models.

The video recording (in English) is available online.
