Since 2020, she has also been directing the national research network on Internet, AI and Society (GDR 2091) which structures thematically the community.

BIOGRAPHY

Perspectives and projects

Melanie’s research focuses on digital commons, regulation by technology, information technology law and policy, and the governance of data (public, private, scientific and urban AI) as commons with the project ODECO. She recently worked on community networks within the H2020 project netCommons (network infrastructure as a commons), algorithmic regulation, peer production digital platforms, citizen science, distributed architectures, open access and open licensing (public sector information, scientific data and publications, public domain works and digital native heritage).

Publications

She co-edited four open access collective books and a journal issue on the public domain and digital commons, as well as a textbook on copyright for librarians which was translated into eight languages. Her second book, Digital Golems. Copyright and Lex Electronica (in French), was featured in Le Monde Diplomatique Books of the Month, and her first co-authored monograph, Intellectual Property, Geopolitics and Globalisation (in French), was translated into Arabic. She co-edited three open access collective books on the digital public domain and digital commons.

Teaching

She taught copyright law and gave a yearly seminar at Sciences Po (2019 and 2020) on Digital Commons, Open Data and Collaborative Platforms.

Service

She is a managing board member of Internet Policy Review and was a board member of the CNRS National Committee Interdisciplinary Commission on Methods, practices, and communications of science and techniques.

Previous positions

She studied political sciences, international relations, and European law in Lyon (France), Leipzig (Germany), and Tilburg (The Netherlands). Before starting her PhD in law (University Paris 2, 2007), she worked at IRCAM Centre Pompidou, the Institute for Research and Coordination in Acoustics/Music, in a cultural community center, and for an indie music label.

She was Creative Commons France co-founder and legal lead (2003-2013) at CERSA CNRS/University Paris 2, and was employed as a researcher staff member by the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard Law School, Nexa Center for Internet & Society at Politecnico di Torino, and the Institute for Information Law of the University of Amsterdam before getting tenure at CNRS in 2010.

She was member of the board and vice-president of the scientific board of OpenEdition (2010-2019) scientific publishing platform (2010-2019). She co-founded in 2011 Communia association on the digital public domain, which she represented at the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

She headed the Information and Commons Research Group at the Institute for Communication Sciences of CNRS/Sorbonne University and was a visiting fellow at London School of Economics Department of Media and Communications from 2013 to 2017.
